Very interesting colour lithographed map of part of the Perth Metropolitan area taken from the rare Third Edition of Road Maps with Index The Metropolitan Area and Environs. Roads in existence at the time are shown in brown, unmade roads are shown as two lines only, the transport routes by bus and tram are shown in red and railways are shown as per normal. Localities are clearing shown.
This lithographed map was printed under instruction from TS Parry Surveyor General of Dept of Lands & Surveys and drawn by the Chief Draftsman’s Branch. P Stanley was Chief Draftsman at the time and W J Kirkby was Senior Cartographer. A rare insight into an emerging city.
In the foreword the Minister for Lands L Thorn said, an endeavour has been made by the Chief Draftsman’s Branch of the Department of Lands and Surveys, under the direction of the Surveyor-General, to produce a street directory worthy of the Cities of Perth and Fremantle with their environs. The information contained in it is taken from the latest official source, and is therefore accurate and authentic. It has been produced with the idea of making it clear, and of use to all authorities desiring such a publication and the public generally…the maps by the addition of colour, are very easy to follow, and have a pleasing effect…from this we gather that the first two editions were published only in black and white one assumes because of austerity measures after the Second World War.
