William Guthrie (1708 – 1770) Guthrie was a Scottish historian, journalist and writer. Born in Brechin, Scotland, he studied at Aberdeen University and assumed he would become a teacher. He moved to London in 1730 and covered parliamentary debates for the Gentleman’s Magazine and soon established himself as a respected political writer. He wrote a number of histories including a History of England from the Invasion of Julius Caesar to 1688 in four volumes. He also translated Cicero but is best known for, his Geography titled A Geographical Historical and Commercial Grammar and Present State of the Several Kingdoms of the World.
