Alexander Gross FRGS (1879-1958) was born in Hungary and migrated to London setting up a map making and publishing company at 55 Fleet Street called Geographia Limited. He produced many atlases and other mapping material including travel maps well into his later life. His maps of the Second World War are very sort after by collectors of militaria.

Many of Gross’s maps were drawn by a ‘Mr Fountain’… the identity of who has not been established. In about 1940 Gross relocated to New York calling his company

‘Geographia Map Company’. The company grew rapidly in America. The British arm of the company was bought out in 1987 by Harper Collins. Rand McNally bought the American arm of the company in the late 1980’s.
