Fine antique double-page steel engraved map with original outline hand-colouring of Australia, Polynesia and New Zealand taken from Stieler’s Hand Atlas uber alle Theile der Erde…published by Justus Perthes and engraved by F v Stulpnagel. Shows in outline are all 26 counties in Western Australia, the 24 counties of New South Wales, the 11 counties in Tasmania, the 22 counties in Australia Felix (Victoria) and the 8 counties of the newest of states, South Australia. Queensland and the Northern Territory had yet to be named and the area was still under the jurisdiction of the colonial government in New South Wales at the time.

AUGUST STIELER worked with his father ADOLPHE. The latter was born in Gotha in 1775 and died in 1836. He issued a Hand Atlas from 1816 to 1828. August continued the business after his father’s death and Stieler’s Hand Atlas continued into many editions constantly being updated, corrected and enlarged. In 1909 the company even published an English Edition. These atlases were known for their incredible detail and accuracy and the company was still producing maps well into the early 20th Century

JOHANN GEORG JUSTUS PERTHES, was a German editor, (1749 – 1816).  He founded the firm of Perthes, which became one of the most powerful publishing houses in Germany. The company concentrated on works which encouraged and enhanced geographical and social knowledge.  Publication continued in the 20th century under Joachim Perthes (1889 – 1954). As the largest publishing house in Germany, Perthes published all of Stieler’s atlases
