Gould intended to publish A Monograph of The Macropodidae or Family of Kangaroos in three parts, but it was never completed, and accordingly, no preliminaries or title pages were ever printed. This proof plate for Bennett’s Wallaby – Halmaturus Bennettii was the precursor to the lithograph published in 1841-42 for the unfinished Monograph. The lithograph used in Mammals of Australia 1845-68 of Bennett’s Wallaby was not the same image. Gould , as he occasionally did, made changes for Mammals of Australia. This makes this proof a very rare and individual piece.
