William Hatherell (1855-1928). Painter of literary and sentimental genre, and illustrator. Born 18 October 1855 in London. He first worked in the City and studied at the R.A. Schools 1877–9. He exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts and Royal Watercolour Society from 1879, showing portraits, genre and illustrations. He also worked for Cassell’s, who sent him to Australia to illustrate Picturesque Australia. He also did illustrative work for The Graphic, and also for American magazines. He lived at Brondesbury, where he laid out a garden and used it as a background for many of his pictures. R.I. 1888. He died in London 7 December 1928.
