John Black Carmichael (1811-1857) was a painter, etcher, art teacher and engraver. Despite being deaf and dumb; a distinguishing handicap often mentioned in relation to his work; Carmichel was nevertheless regarded as one of the most competent engravers in Sydney. He is also notable for having been one of the earliest free emigrant artists to pursue a lifelong professional career in New South Wales.
