The first registered sighting by Europeans of Bunbury was by Captain Louis de Freycinet in 1803. He named the area Port Leschenault after the expedition’s botanist Leschenault de La Tour. Bunbury was established on the orders of Governor James Stirling in 1836 and named after it’s founder Lieutenant Henry Bunbury.
