Sidney Hall, (1788 – 1831) worked as an engraver from 1817 till his death. He first worked at 18 Strand, and moved to Bury Street Bloomsbury in 1819. He engraved for most of the prominent London Map publishers, Aaron Arrowsmith, William Faden, William Harwood and John Thomson among others. Hall is credited as being one of the earliest adopters of steel plate engraving, a technique that allowed for finer detail and larger print runs due the exceptional hardness of the plates.  He engraved general atlases as well as separate maps for various authors and publishers including Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown and Green, Chapman and Hall, Murray, Leigh and A& C Black.  Upon his death his business passed to his wife, Selina who continued to publish under the imprint ‘S Hall’ and the business eventually passed to her nephew Edward Weller, who became extremely in his own right.
